Ladies of Law
New Year, New Goals!
As we spring into 2022, we first need to reflect and remind ourselves of the achievements of 2021 to further push us to plan, organise and create the life we want by making proactive steps for our careers.
If you’ve only just decided to pursue law or it has been your dream for years to be standing in a court room as a barrister, it is never too late to make small (or big) goals by planning and assessing how you’re going to achieve them! Even if you're not interested in law and looking for some encouragement, welcome to you too!
The saying around this time of year is usually ‘NEW YEAR, NEW ME’ but that saying went out of fashion years ago. You are perfect as you are and do not need to reinvent yourself completely to get to where you need to be. Yes - there may be aspects of your life you’d like to change, or find ways to further educate yourself and learn new skills (which we totally agree with!) Every step you take is growth; whether that be personal, emotional or professional growth. It's easier said than done but try not to be too hard on yourself if you didn’t achieve ALL you wanted in 2021. It was a hard year with COVID-19 still around, you may be working from home or studying online but it’s important to celebrate the little wins as well as the big wins. Did you finally read that book that’s been sitting on your shelf? Did you pass a difficult exam or bag that new job? Just turning up to work/university even if when you don't feel like it is an achievement in itself; remember you are preparing yourself for amazing things to come. These things take time, but time keeps moving on, it doesn’t pause, stop or slow down. The hours and days keep ticking so it won’t be long until you are where you want to be! Trust in the process and be patient! If you are where you want to be, that's amazing! At Ladies of Law, we truly believe you can do anything you want to do and be whoever you want to be. So if there's a promotion you'd like or an extra skill you'd like to gain in 2022, we have every faith that you'll achieve it! The first step is believing in yourself. Having the determination to prove yourself wrong can be a catalyst for success, Imagine how satisfying it will feel when you do!
Although at Ladies of Law we are all about celebrating and empowering women in the legal field, we recognise the struggles women can face in this industry as it is highly competitive and still male dominated but that’s what we’re here for: to remind you that YOU CAN DO THIS on those days you feel like you can't. Everyone has those days where they feel deflated, impatient or unworthy. That's just a part of being human but it's how you channel that to push yourself forward and reminding yourself of the positives, which will drive you forward.
On the days where you’re not as motivated to finish that essay or work on those case documents which you might have put off for a while, we hope our empowering message through our social media platforms and blogs can give you a daily dose of encouragement and support to get through the slow days to remind you of why YOU’RE SO GREAT!

Make 2022 your year in your own way! Here are some small steps you can take to make 2022 a productive one:
1. Write down your top 10 goals for 2022 (doesn’t just have to be career/law related)
2. Under each goal, ask yourself: How am I going to get there? Break it down into a step by step plan if you need to, (research is the best for this if you don’t know to get there – thank goodness for Google)
3. Think of 3 things that would make you happy in 2022: this can be progress at work, networking with other ladies in the field, taking up a new hobby or new skill or spending time with family/friends,
4. Talk about your goals with family and friends! Saying our goals out loud can make them feel more in reach and realistic. If we believe we can truly achieve our goals, we’re already halfway there as we’re in the right frame of mind, and finally;
5. Watch some inspiring Ted Talks or encouraging podcasts on those less motivated days so you can hear of success stories from those people who are where you want to be! Just imagine - that could be you!
If you take anything away from this blog post, let it be this quote to remind yourself: 'Goal setting is the first step in turning the invisible into the visible!'
We hope 2022 is your year filled with happiness, success and growth! We will be with you for support and encouragement when you need it and to remind you that YOU’VE GOT THIS!
